As a marriage and family therapist I am asked frequently what are some good books to read about marriage. Or I get asked what books I would suggest about anxiety or books on self-esteem or what are some books to read about parenting. (All of which I always have great suggestions of course!)
There is one area that I’m not asked as often that I think is very important… premarital therapy. If you are looking for books to read before you get married, you have come to the right place. As a marriage therapist, here are 7 great books I suggest every couple should consider buying before they tie the knot.
Marriage is hard (many of us know that) but I never would have imagined marriage to be what it actually is. When I was younger, I never thought marriage would take so much work and continuous learning. These books would be great reads even if you are already married and haven’t read them yet.
These books about relationships and marriage are ones I also suggest to those that come in for marital counseling after being married for years. Whether your marriage is going through tough times or not, learning more about how to improve your marriage and how to create a healthier relationship with your spouse can never be a bad thing.
Here is a list of 10 great books on marriage and improving your marriage or relationship (some books are on both lists… they are just that good!)
In addition to these books about how to create a strong & healthy marriage, I always suggest every couple do premarital counseling. It doesn’t hurt anything if you don’t get anything from it but if you find the right marriage counselor and are in the right place (willing to listen & try new ways) then premarital counseling can make a big difference as you make this big step in your life.
Here are my suggestions for books about marriage for couples before getting married:
1- The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman
2- The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by Dr. John Gottman
3- Hold Me Tight by Dr. Sue Johnson
4- Passionate Marriage by Dr. David Schnarch
5- The Course of Love by Alain de Botton
6- Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel
7- Smart Couples Finish Rich by David Bach
Are there any books for newlyweds or those going to get married that you would suggest?
